"I saw children playing in the ruins of a windowless building amid jagged stumps of brick and stone"

Here is the internal link where I analyze a literary device that Hosseini uses in this part of the passage.

In this quote, Amir describes what he sees when walking down the streets of Jadeh Maywand in Kabul. He mentions, "children playing in the ruins of a windowless building amid jagged stumps of brick and stone."  This piece of imagery depicts a scene where children are playing in buildings that are falling apart. This shows the state that parts of Afghanistan are in due to the war, and how its citizens, and especially the children, are affected by it, which helps the readers understand the harsh living conditions. This quote also emphasizes cultural values such as civil unrest and life during wartime.
